Somatic or Somatics is a term that is gaining a lot of popularity and usage in the health, wellness, and yoga spaces! And rightfully so. Western research is beginning to validate the use of somatics in overall health and wellness. But, what exactly is "somatic?" Somatic is a general, umbrella term that means relating to the body, and often differentiating the body from the mind. While this is a pretty broad definition, the application of somatics in health & wellness spaces can mean a lot of different things. Exactly what makes a practice "somatic" might differ between practitioners, styles of yoga or other modalities, and more. Somatics can be a very powerful tool to incorporate, especially when used methodically to instigate mindful and intentional movement in the body. As a practictioner and teacher, I view the addition of somatics to my offerings as a wonderful opportunity to take a holisitic approach to health and wellness. If we can address the physical body, mental/emotional body, and the spiritual body by incorporating somatics into yoga and breathwork, that is a success to me!
