Somatics Explained

Somatic or Somatics is a term that is gaining a lot of popularity and usage in the health, wellness, and yoga spaces! And rightfully so. Western research is beginning to validate the use of somatics in overall health and wellness. But, what exactly is "somatic?" Somatic is a general, umbrella term that means relating to the body, and often differentiating the body from the mind. While this is a pretty broad definition, the application of somatics in health & wellness spaces can mean a lot of different things. Exactly what makes a practice "somatic" might differ between practitioners, styles of yoga or other modalities, and more. Somatics can be a very powerful tool to incorporate, especially when used methodically to instigate mindful and intentional movement in the body. As a practictioner and teacher, I view the addition of somatics to my offerings as a wonderful opportunity to take a holisitic approach to health and wellness. If we can address the physical body, mental/emotional body, and the spiritual body by incorporating somatics into yoga and breathwork, that is a success to me!

What is Energy Medicine Yoga?

Energy Medicine Yoga is a type of yoga that combines traditional yoga poses with energy medicine practices, such as tapping, acupressure, and energy meridian tracing. The goal of this practice is to balance the body's energy systems and promote overall health and well-being.

Energy Medicine Yoga was developed by Lauren Walker, a certified energy medicine practitioner and yoga teacher. The practice is based on the principles of energy medicine, which is a holistic approach to healing that focuses on the body's energy systems and their connection to physical, emotional, and mental health.

In Energy Medicine Yoga, practitioners use specific poses, movements, and breathwork techniques to activate and balance their body's energy systems, which are believed to affect physical, emotional, and mental health. The practice may also involve the use of energy medicine tools, such as crystals and essential oils, to enhance the healing effects of the practice.

Overall, Energy Medicine Yoga (EMY) is a unique and integrative approach to yoga that can benefit anyone looking to improve their health and well-being.

There are five rules of energy in Energy Medicine Yoga that practitioners follow to balance their energy systems and promote health and well-being. These rules are:

  1. Energy follows attention: Wherever we focus our attention, our energy will follow. By focusing our attention on specific parts of the body, we can activate and balance the corresponding energy systems.
  2. Energy moves in specific patterns: The body's energy systems follow specific pathways or meridians, similar to the circulatory system. Energy Medicine Yoga uses specific movements and poses to activate and balance these pathways.
  3. Optimal energy flow depends on balance: In order to maintain optimal health, our energy systems need to be in balance. Energy Medicine Yoga uses a variety of techniques to restore balance to the body's energy systems.
  4. The body has its own healing wisdom: Our bodies have a natural ability to heal and restore balance. Energy Medicine Yoga supports this innate healing wisdom by promoting the flow of energy and removing blockages.
  5. We are all energetic beings: Everything in the universe, including our bodies, is made up of energy. By working with the body's energy systems, Energy Medicine Yoga helps to promote health and well-being on a deep, holistic level.
